A Tally of Two Cities

paris versus new york book

Despite my lack of coffee table, I am all for stocking up on fun coffee table books. Right now, I am loving Vahram Muratyan’s Paris versus New York: The Complete Series of Two Cities, inspired by his blog of the same name. You all know how much I adore Boston and London, yet NYC and Pari will always have special places in my heart as well. Muratyan’s charming prints depicting the two most loved cities are so simple, yet so clever. This new Penguin deluxe edition featured 35 brand new illustrations, and I don’t think I will ever get sick of flipping through it.

Back to the grind everyone! After the cheer of Christmas is over, I find it hard to keep up motivation before spring comes around again. That goes for a few things, but most of all, for dressing. Working in a particularly chilly office with a casual dress code, it’s easy to slip into the trap of jeans, cardigans, and [forgive me] Uggs on a daily basis. My goal for January is to take advantage of tights, cute but not too casual sweaters, and warm riding boots [not pictured...].

How are you planing to stay warm, but chic, throughout the rest of the winter months?

Garance Doré for Kate Spade New York

This weekend I stopped in Kate Spade New York‘s Newbury Street store, where they were celebrating French fashion blogger Garance Doré and her illustrations featured as a part of the brand’s new capsule collection. I am absolutely smitten with this line: peter pan collars, French script, and bow details– what is not to j’adore?

Studio Pull Over, $128
Laura Top, $248
Umbrella, $78
Georgie Pouch, $98
iPhone Case, $40
Julia Wristlet, $88

All in all, I would like to get my hands on one of these pieces more than most things. Which is your favorite?

Tee Time

I wish I were one of those girls that could effortless style a baggy t-shirt into a super chic look… girls like MK+A, Sydney, and Lauren Conrad. I am very much guilty of over-purchasing tees, and then I end up wearing them only to dance rehearsals or with skinny jeans on lazy days. Maybe I’m still taking the skinny denim route, but there ain’t no way I’m putting on such heels on a lazy day, so believe it or not this Friday’s Fancies was a challenge for me…!

Creme de la Creme T-Shirt, Zoe Karssen, $85
Polka Dot Verdugo Skinny Jeans, Paige Denim, $190
Wayfarer Acetate Sunglasses, Ray-Ban, $155
Gold Tone Knot Earrings, River Island, $3
Cielo Pointed Toe Pumps, BCBGeneration, $89
Creme de la Creme Idiom Bangle, Kate Spade, $48

Ooh La La

While miss {av} is on a little overseas voyage, we’re doing a Eurotrip Friday’s Fancies in her honor. I’ve still got Parisian details on my mind, and while this look may a bit too over-the-top touristy for France itself, I think it would work just fine from afar.

With every summer comes the promise of reminiscing. As the warm months hit, no matter how much time has passed, I can’t help but be transported right back to my weeks traveling Europe. Paris has a particularly special place in my heart, and I’ve been spoiled enough to visit it over two summers in fact. This tulle skirt was my best attempt at blending into the French fashion scene, and I pull it out every now and then when I need a little fun + chic in my life.

Perhaps this isn’t the most patriotic post in honor of America’s birthday week, so je suis désolé!

Are you inspired by fashions from any of your travels?

Maison Ladurée

It’s no secret that I love French macarons. Love actually might be an understatement. That’s why I was thrilled when I got to make a quick stop at Maison Ladurée on Madison Ave while in NYC this past weekend.

I counted the days for this little Parisian bakery to open from the moment I first heard it was coming stateside, and I first visited it in November during my last New York trip. I even attempted to make my own macarons in the meantime. But let me tell you, the real thing? Nothing even compares.

Have you visited any of the Ladurée locations, in the U.S. or overseas? Tell me your favorite flavors if so, I have yet to try all of them!

Macarons mon amie!

Remember how I’m obsessed with Ladurée’s Parisian macarons?  And how I totally failed last time I tried to make them?  Well I couldn’t wait another minute for the French to arrive in NYC, so I try tried again and this time was much more successful!

I stopped searching around for tips and tricks and secret recipes and instead went with good old Martha Stew.  And she really didn’t let me down!  It wasn’t an easy process by any means, and it is definitely a two-person job, but when Puffy and I went slowly and really followed the recipe step by step (sounds like such an easy concept but I definitely improvise a lot when it comes to baking), we succeeded :)

They’re just too pretty and delicate to resist, and with some Nutella and raspberry jam filling, the were the perfect little Sunday afternoon treat.  If you’re going to attempt these little buggers, my only advice is to dare not substitute.  Make the extra trip for the almond flour and superfine sugar because it really does make a difference, and I think that’s where I went wrong the first time.  Click here for Martha’s recipe.

Bon appetit mes amis!

Ladurée to Open in New York City

Oh happy day, Ladurée is finally coming to the States!

A Parisian bakery and tea room famous for its macarons, Ladurée is easily the most beautiful eatery I have ever seen.  Problem is, most of its locations are in Europe and I have been waiting for one to open a bit closer to home since the first day I saw it, four summers ago.  Well the day is almost here, as Maison Ladurée will open a location on Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side later this summer! Oh what will I wear?!

A couple of weeks ago I tried to make my own version of their famous macarons.  Needless to say, I failed.  Note to self: Do not attempt to beat egg whites without an electric mixer…
